Break your spring fever in Oklahoma City's Adventure District
OKLAHOMA CITY - The countdown to spring break has begun, and many Oklahomans are searching for entertainment during the days out of school.
For those looking to stay nearby, Oklahoma City's Adventure District has a variety of options to entertain spring breakers.
Step back in time and come face-to-face with dinosaurs at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Presented by Dr Pepper, discover Dinosaurs Unearthed and meet such prehistoric giants as Tyrannosaurus Rex. Dinosaurs Unearthed begins March 13 and is included in regular Zoo admission.
Also at the Zoo, Sea Lion Show season begins March 14. Show times are Wednesday through Friday at 10 a.m. and noon. Saturdays at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., and Sundays at noon and 2 p.m. Cost is $2 for adults and $1 for Kids 3-11. Children two and under are free.
Science Museum Oklahoma features a special exhibit, SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure on display through Memorial Day. The exhibit includes a combination of hands-on exhibits and interactive media where visitors can experience the thrill of being a shipwreck explorer. Discover pirate stories and shipwreck treasures, including gold, silver and priceless artifacts from the SS Republic®, the greatest shipwreck of the Civil War.
To complement the SHIPWRECK! exhibit, campers can spend the night as a pirate at Science Museum Oklahoma during the Night of Arghhh camp-in. Beginning at 6 p.m. March 20 and ending at 8 a.m. March 21, participants can learn all sorts of pirate skills like catapulting, swashbuckling and why pirates really wear an eye patch. Be the first to discover pirate stories and shipwreck treasures in the Museum's exhibit. IMAX films, planetarium shows and Science Live shows can also be seen during the camp-in.
Visitors looking for an early spring break getaway can catch OU, Tennessee and Northwestern softball teams in The Preview presented by Worth at the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame complex. The three top-25 teams will battle it out in a collegiate showdown played in round-robin style March 7 and 8.
March 13 through 22, experience the Oklahoma Youth Expo Western Art Show at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The top award-winning entries from the show are exhibited in the Museum's east hall. This art show coincides with the Oklahoma Youth Expo, the world's largest junior livestock show, held at State Fair Park.
Other temporary exhibits in the National Cowboy Museum such as the American Indian Mural Painting in Oklahoma and the Southwest, Art of the West: Bank of America Collection, and Guardians of Glacier Park: The Blackfeet in Artistic Imagination complement the permanent galleries at the National Cowboy Museum, which include a turn of the century cattle town, fine art, artifacts and more.
Spring breakers hoping to catch a few movies can head to Cinemark Tinseltown USA Theatre. From Race to Witch Mountain to Duplicity Tinseltown features the latest family-friendly movies on the big screen. With 20 theaters featuring stadium seating and state-of-the-art sound equipment, guests of all ages enjoy movies at Tinseltown.
The excitement of live Quarter Horse racing is back beginning March 6 at Remington Park Racing Casino every Thursday through Sunday until May 31. Visitors can try their luck in Remington Park's casino when taking a break from watching the horses race.
Stop at the Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum where children can learn important fire safety messages on the new junior firefighters activity center. Inside, visitors can find out all about firefighters and their equipment with a new audio tour and visit the gift shop with firefighting collectibles.
