Oklahoma City's Adventure District: A Destination for Family Fun

OKLAHOMA CITY — Find fun for every family member during spring break in Oklahoma City’s Adventure District.  From treehouses to zoo animals and Western art to quarter horse racing, the Adventure District has it all.

Located an the junction of I-35 and I-44 in northeast Oklahoma City, the Adventure District’s seven attractions present a diverse array of entertainment opportunities.  Within a two-mile area, find Omniplex Science Museum, Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden, Remington Park Racing Casino, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, National Softball Hall of Fame, Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum and Cinemark Tinseltown USA.

Experience the wonder and relevance of science at Omniplex Science Museum.  The 10-acre museum is home to hands-on science exhibits, aviation artifacts, Kirkpatrick Planetarium and Oklahoma’s only giant, dome-screen theater all under one roof.

The forest is brought indoors at the highly anticipated GadgetTrees opening March 7.  The exhibit features a two-story treehouse, the largest oak west of the Mississippi and the world’s largest spiral slide.  Within the treehouse are ladders, pulleys and incline planes, simple machines that create a hands-on way to learn about science.

After exploring the treehouses, wander through the Forest of Knowledge to learn about the value of Oklahoma’s forests and their impact on everyday life.

Recently named one of the top three family-friendly zoos in the nation by Child Magazine, the Oklahoma City Zoo is home to more than 1,500 of the world’s most exotic animals.  

Beginning March 10, the Zoo opens a new animal exhibit featuring 100 species of animals native to Oklahoma.  Oklahoma Trails offers eight acres of animal adventure that provide up-close encounters with grizzly and black bears, cougars, bison, alligator snapping turtles and many more.  Paired with the beauty of plants found in the state’s diverse terrain, the exhibit is a tribute to Oklahoma.

The race is on at Remington Park Racing Casino. The American Quarter Horse Racing Season begins March 9, promising excitement for young and old alike.  Races begin at 6:25 p.m. every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through June 3.  Adults will enjoy the state-of-the-art casino, which recently celebrated its first anniversary, as well as simulcast racing seven days a week.

Western heritage comes alive at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum through stunning art, historical objects and professional exhibitions in a breathtaking setting.  From fine art, pop culture and firearms to Native American objects, historical cowboy gear, shopping and dining, the Museum offers a must-see destination.  

Pinturas de Fe: The Retablo Tradition in Mexico and New Mexico explores the tradition of the Mexican retablo, small devotional paintings that depict saints and religious figures.  The exhibit, on display through April 29, features paintings, photographs and text panels written in both English and Spanish.

Cinemark Tinseltown USA brings movie magic to Oklahoma City at an affordable rate.  Enjoy Hollywood’s latest releases for only $5.50 for an adult evening ticket.  

The heat is on at the Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum.  Discover fire trucks, try on firefighters’ gear and experience real live firefighting history. With an impressive collection of historic fire engines and firefighting tools, the museum is a sure hit for firefighting enthusiasts.   A one-of-a-kind outdoor memorial pays tribute to all firefighters who have honorably served Oklahoma—past, present and future.  

Learn about softball’s history at the National Softball Hall of Fame and Museum. View memorabilia from players and learn about the coaches and fans who have contributed to the game’s rich tradition. The All-Sports Association Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium, adjacent to the Museum, hosts NCAA College World Series, Big XII and World Cup Championships.
