Take a Spring Break in the Adventure District

OKLAHOMA CITY - The countdown to spring break has begun and for Oklahomans looking to stay close to home, Oklahoma City’s Adventure District has a variety of events and exhibits to entertain those of all ages.

Don’t miss the opening of the brand new Children’s Zoo at the Oklahoma City Zoo March 12. Just in time for some spring break fun, this 2.5-acre, $8 million endeavor opens up a new world for kids to rediscover their natural surroundings. The Children’s Zoo includes interactive activities like climbing structures in the Secret Forest, water elements in the Waterway, the return of the Zoo’s popular ExpLorikeet Adventure and the Canopy where kids can swing like monkeys.

Also at the Zoo, spring break day camps are available March 16-19. Each day camp offers a variety of activities including Zoo tours, crafts, games and up-close animal visits. Advance registration is required. Visit okczoo.com for more information.

Those looking for an early spring break activity can catch OU, OSU, Louisville and Nevada softball teams in The Preview at the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame Complex March 6. An exciting Bedlam match-up takes place at 3 p.m. For tickets call (800) 654-8337.

Throughout March, grab some friends to enjoy free entertainment and fun at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum for Concert at The Cowboy. In conjunction with the temporary exhibit The Guitar: Art, Artists and Artisans, the Museum presents free concerts March 5, 12 and 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. each night. Oklahoma blues/acoustic and classic rock entertainer Otis Watkins performs March 5, Oklahoma guitarist extraordinaire Edgar Cruz performs March 12 and Red Dirt musician and singer Brandon Jackson performs March 19. Other temporary exhibits in the National Cowboy Museum such as When Animals Attack? Humorous Hunting Tableaux and Bonita Wa Wa Calachaw Nunez: Selected Works are perfect for the adults while the children enjoy interactive activities in the Children’s Cowboy Corral.

Spring breakers hoping to take in a few movies can head to Cinemark Tinseltown USA Theater where ticket prices are the lowest in town. Tinseltown features the latest new-release movies including Alice in Wonderland, opening March 5. With 20 theaters featuring stadium seating and the newest in sound and 3-D digital technology, guests of all ages enjoy movies at Tinseltown.

Make a stop at the Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum where children can learn important fire safety messages on the new junior firefighters activity center. Inside, visitors can find out all about firefighters and their equipment with a new audio tour. Don’t skip the gift shop complete with firefighting collectibles.

The thrill of live racing is back at Remington Park beginning March 5 with the American Quarter Horse season. Enjoy live racing every Thursday (beginning March 18) through Sunday until May 31. Visitors can also try their luck in Remington Park’s casino when taking a break from watching the exciting horse races.

Located at the junction of I-35 and I-44 in northeast Oklahoma City, the Adventure District includes the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden, Remington Park Racing Casino, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, ASA National Softball Hall of Fame, Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum and Cinemark Tinseltown USA. Oklahoma City’s Adventure District is supported through members and partnerships including the Gaylord-Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum.
